The $2 billion initiative is only the second Public Private Partnership (PPP) undertaken in Queensland and one of the biggest PPP projects currently under construction in Australia.
The RiverCity Motorway consortium, comprising Leighton Contractors and Baulderstone Hornibrook Bilfinger Berger, was selected to design, construct, operate and maintain the first of four road projects in Brisbane City Council’s TransApex vision in April 2006.
The finance package included a $724 million Initial Public Offering (IPO) of stapled units in the RiverCity Motorway trusts, making it the largest IPO in Queensland’s corporate history.
The North-South Bypass Tunnel (NSBT) is approximately 6.8 kilometres in length and includes a 4.8 kilometre dual lane twin tunnel.
Located under the Brisbane River it will connect Bowen Hills and Woolloongabba. Construction is well underway with a contract completion date of 2010.
When complete the NSBT will enable motorists to bypass the city, avoiding 18 sets of traffic lights. Additional benefits include reduced congestion, improved air quality, increased cyclist and pedestrian access and rejuvenation of urban areas which will further enhance city life for Brisbane residents and visitors.
